Museum of Tahiti and her islands- Te Fare Manaha November 11, 2014 to February 21, 2015 – Tuesday to Sunday – from 9h to 17h

Curators of the exhibition:
Tara Hiquily and Michel Charleux, assisted by Christel Vieille

A trip to the heart of the various Pacific archipelagos is offered to the visitors of this exhibition. In the museum’s large temporary exhibition room, more than 50 tapas are Great Polynesia and also Melanesia. The public will be able to enjoy tapas from Wallis and Futuna, French Polynesia, Tonga, Samoa, the Cook Islands, Hawai’i, Rapa Nui, Pitcairn, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, Fiji and New Caledonia. Very old tapa (late eighteenth or early nineteenth century) are exposed alongside recent tapas.

These pieces, taken from the Museum’s reserves and various private collections, including those from the Wallis and Futuna Delegation in Polynesia, are for the most part exhibited for the first time to the public. Part of the exhibition is also devoted to the technical aspects of tapa making: the plants used and the tapa obtained, the tools used (beaters, one of which was 1000 years old, and three beaters that belonged to the Queen Marau, anvils, dies, etc.), plants for dyes, graphics, the scent of tapa.

This well-documented exhibition finally shows the differences and constants that exist by geographical area, in the manufacture of tapa.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid gap=”0″ grid_id=”vc_gid:1509147209506-921c6d8f-a00d-0″ include=”4435,4434,4433″][/vc_column][/vc_row]
