This exhibition is the result of the work of Patrick Seurot, who is preparing a doctoral thesis in economic history at The University of French Polynesia: “Nacres and Pearls in Tuamotu in the 19th Century (1801-1920) Economy, Society, Culture.”
It focuses on the epic of Polynesian mother-of-pearl, from a pearl oyster unique to In reconstructing the history of fishing and the uses of this mother-of-pearl, between the year one thousand and the middle of the twentieth century, this is a whole piece of Polynesian history that is coming back to life. four highlights, which make it possible to understand all the themes related to mother-of-pearl. The first room is dedicated to the biology and biotope of the Pinctada margaritifera, variety Cumingii.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The first part of the 2nd room is devoted to mother-of-pearl and its uses before and during the Contact Period (1600-1800), exposing the myths and legends related to the pearl oyster, as well as the different daily uses of its mother-of-pearl. The second part tells the epic of the mother-of-pearl plume in Tuamotu and Gambier between 1801 and 1950 mainly.
