To welcome visitors during its renovation process, the Musée de Tahiti et des Îles – Te Fare Manaha will host a new exhibition, « TUPUNA ➔ TRANSIT », from 30 March 2019 to 20 September 2020.
The show will feature a hundred of objects held in the museum’s collections. These are representative of the 5 archipelagos of French Polynesia, and most of them used to be displayed in the permanent galleries, closed since 2018 due to their planned refurbishment.
During this transitional period, our tupuna’s (ancestors) works are moving and this exhibition stands as a way to accompany them in their journey, and to enlighten them through a new gaze. The show will offer visitors a new setting retracing the history of the institution, as well as its futures, and the various stakes the museum’s curatorial team is facing to build tomorrow’s museum.
The first section of the exhibition will thus replace the show within the museum’s history and future, through a presentation of the renovation project.
The second section will then focus on key objects held in the museum’s collections, representative of the Society Islands, the Marquesas, the Austral, Tuamotu, and Gambier Islands. Four canoes will support a series of objects, symbolising the idea of voyage to refer to the great Polynesian migrations, as well as the current transit of the collections. Recent acquisitions will also be highlighted in a specific glass case.
A pedagogical section will conclude the exhibition, offering several of the museum’s publications for consultation, as well as a 3D animation allowing visitors to browse through the former permanent galleries and watch movies made for preceding temporary exhibitions.
During the eighteenth month of the « Tupuna ➔ Transit » exhibition, these digital installations will necessarily evolve. On one hand, they will serve to try out several mediation tools considered for the new permanent display. On the other, flyers in English will be available to the touristic audience, while tours in French, English, and German will be regularly featured, alongside school-targeted visits.
This exhibition therefore holds a specific position, at the crossing of the museum’s new life and the exploration of new ways to rejuvenate the audience’s interaction with the display.
